Hakone’s mountain transport
Mountain railway, cable car, ropeway and lake cruise make the route itself memorable.
Private day tour · From Tokyo
Ride through the mountains, cross an active volcanic valley, cruise Lake Ashi and discover one of Japan’s most atmospheric shrines — with Mount Fuji views when the weather allows.
A complete Hakone day
Hakone is one of the best day trips from Tokyo because the journey itself is part of the experience.
We travel through the mountains using Hakone’s famous railway, cable car and ropeway, stop at the volcanic valley of Owakudani, cross Lake Ashi by sightseeing ship and, when time permits, finish at Hakone Shrine beneath towering cedar trees.
Note: Mount Fuji visibility depends entirely on the weather. I adapt the order of the day when conditions or transportation schedules make another sequence more sensible.
Hakone
Hydrangeas colour the mountain railway in June and early July, while autumn brings red and golden foliage across the slopes. Winter often offers the clearest air for Mount Fuji views.

Owakudani reveals the active geology beneath this famous hot-spring region.
When the weather is favourable, I prioritise the best practical opportunities for Mount Fuji views.
Your Hakone journey
The standard itinerary I use for my private Hakone day tour from Tokyo.
Hotel pick-up in central Tokyo or meeting at Shinjuku Station. Travel to Hakone by Odakyu Romancecar, with Shinkansen available as an alternative.
Ride the Hakone Tozan Railway through the mountains and its famous switchbacks. In early summer, hydrangeas line the route; autumn brings vivid maple colours.
Continue uphill by the Hakone Tozan Cable Car through forested slopes.
Travel above the volcanic landscape toward Owakudani. On clear days, this is one of the best moments for Mount Fuji views.
Explore the active volcanic valley, sulfur vents and the famous black eggs associated with Hakone.
A flexible Japanese lunch stop, with time to enjoy local food and the scenery.
Cross Lake Ashi aboard the sightseeing ship. Weather permitting, Mount Fuji may appear beyond the lake.
If transportation and waiting times allow, walk through the cedar forest to the shrine and its iconic lakeside torii.
Return via Hakone-Yumoto, finishing around Shinjuku in the evening.
